What to check in Indonesia
Bank Indonesia states that virtual currencies are not recognized as payment instruments and sets rules for use of rupiah in domestic transactions. Do not equate permission to hold or trade an asset with permission to use it to pay for services. Confirm the supported local-bank arrangement for the contributor.
Record the agreed currency, the exchange-rate basis if conversion is involved, and the recipient’s net amount. Separate contributor registration and tax questions from payment eligibility so the team knows which issue to resolve when onboarding is incomplete.
Check the relationship before choosing task pay
Indonesia’s manpower legislation defines an employment relationship by work, wages, and orders. For contributor programs, document how assignments and instructions operate, and assess those facts under the current framework. A service-agreement title or task-based calculation is not a substitute for that review.
Define the role you are recruiting in Indonesia: occasional labeling, regular quality review, or specialist work such as writing evaluation tasks. Document whether contributors choose tasks, whether you require fixed schedules, and how ongoing supervision works. Ask for a country-specific classification assessment of those facts.
Per-task compensation does not by itself establish contractor status. Agree acceptance criteria, rework, dispute handling, and bonus eligibility in writing. If your operating model changes, revisit the engagement rather than assuming the original agreement still fits.
Tax registration and reporting
Indonesia’s individual annual income-tax return uses NIK/NPWP identification and distinguishes income categories. Confirm the contributor’s taxpayer identity and reporting category, and retain the evidence for the service payment. Local tax records are separate from any foreign-status form requested by a US payer.
Choose a route the contributor can actually receive
Start with the receiving account and the agreed currency. IDR is the domestic currency to consider, but the available settlement currency and route depend on the bank, contributor, provider, and applicable rules. Confirm those details before promising a payment method.
The options below are a comparison checklist, not a confirmed Toku country-coverage matrix. Agree the available route, recipient eligibility, fees, and settlement currency in your program setup.
| Method | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Bank transfer | Beneficiary match, currency, fees, bank details, and required payment references |
| Card payout | Provider and recipient eligibility; do not assume every card can receive funds |
| Stablecoin, where permitted | Local payment rules, supported asset and network, recipient eligibility, and conversion needs |
