Plan your first hire in UK with an employer of record. Review contracts, payroll, employer costs, onboarding, and local employment requirements.

An employer of record UK arrangement provides a local employer for a team that is not ready to establish its own employing entity. Before comparing monthly fees, confirm the employee location, contract, payroll setup, pension obligations, and who handles employment questions. Northern Ireland can require a different legal analysis from Great Britain.

Choose the right worker relationship

Confirm that employment is the appropriate model for the role. The provider should explain who employs the person and how your business directs day-to-day work. A contractor agreement is not an alternative merely because it costs less. Document the employee location and whether the role involves work elsewhere.

Check onboarding and PAYE responsibilities

HMRC guidance explains the need to determine whether a worker must be paid through PAYE. Confirm right-to-work checks, payroll registration and reporting, the employment agreement, and the information needed for a new starter. Ask the EOR for clear ownership and deadlines for each step.

Include workplace pension duties

Employers have workplace-pension duties for eligible staff. Ask your provider how eligibility assessment, enrollment, employer contributions, employee communications, and ongoing administration are handled. Request a cost breakdown rather than treating pensions as an unspecified benefits line.

Review the complete employer cost

Compare gross salary, employer taxes and contributions, pension costs, benefits, service fees, and payment charges. Have the provider explain any deposit, foreign-exchange spread, or offboarding charge. For variable pay, agree how approvals reach payroll and how adjustments appear on the employee payslip.

Prepare for changes and redundancy

Use the local employer to review material employment changes before making promises. Redundancy is about a job no longer being needed and has its own obligations. Ask who manages consultation, alternatives, notice, and any applicable payments. A commercial cancellation of your EOR subscription is not itself an employment termination process.

Payroll in local currency or stablecoins

Establish the local employment and payroll obligations first. If you want a stablecoin payout option, ask which worker, currency, consent, tax, and settlement conditions apply. Do not assume a payment method changes the wage obligation or replaces local payroll records.
